Skin does not behave the same way year-round, and expecting it to is one of the most common reasons people feel frustrated with their routines. Just as Buffalo shifts from lake-effect winters to humid summers, your skin adapts constantly to temperature, humidity, stress levels, hormones, diet, and environment. When we ignore those shifts and continue using the same products and intensity levels without adjustment, the skin often responds with imbalance.

In colder months, trans epidermal water loss increases, meaning your skin loses hydration more quickly.

The barrier becomes more vulnerable, and ingredients that felt manageable in summer can suddenly feel irritating. In warmer months, increased oil production and sweat can lead to congestion if exfoliation is too infrequent or if products are too occlusive.

The goal is not to fight these changes but to anticipate and support them.

Ep.2/

skin has seasons

Seasonal shifts are not just environmental. Hormonal cycles, travel, illness, stress, and sleep patterns all influence how your skin behaves. Breakouts may increase during periods of high cortisol. Redness may intensify when the nervous system is overstimulated. Dullness may appear during times of dehydration or nutritional depletion.

Instead of asking, “What product fixes this?” a better question is, “What changed?” When you approach skin with curiosity rather than urgency, patterns begin to emerge. You start to notice that your skin is not unpredictable; it is responsive.

At The Barn, treatments are adjusted according to what your skin is experiencing in that moment. Some visits call for stimulation and circulation. Others require calming, barrier repair, and lymphatic support. Healthy skin is not static. It moves through cycles, and respecting those cycles produces more stable, long-term results than rigid routines ever will.
